Southington Sand and Gravel receives NSSGA Gold Safety Excellence Award

In January 2013, Tilcon Connecticut’s Southington Sand and Gravel plant was awarded the Gold Safety Excellence Award by The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association. The awards program recognizes aggregates operations throughout the United States and Canada for their extraordinary commitment to safety during 2011-2012. The Safety Excellence Program was created in 1987 to promote safe working conditions and practices and to recognize, on an annual basis, individual operations with exemplary safety records among NSSGA member companies. Southington has been an accident free work place for 37 years.

Connecticut paving project earns NAPA award

Tilcon Connecticut received a Quality in Construction Award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) in February 2013 for the pavement preservation of I-84 in East Hartford and Manchester.

The project took place on a five-lane, 17,000-foot stretch of I-84 and a three-lane, 6,700-foot section of I-384. Tilcon utilized two paving crews working six days a week to place 85,000 tons of asphalt.

The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) used this as a research project because of the RAP content and WMA foaming technology. NCAT personnel were on site to monitor the control section and WMA production.

Tilcon received a ride quality and compaction bonus for the completed project.
