Serving Connecticut's communities for over 80 years....

Angelo Tomasso, Sr. incorporated Angelo Tomasso, Inc. in 1923. With just one piece of equipment, a Bucyrus Erie steam shovel, the New Britain construction company handled sewer and road building projects. One of the earliest projects the company undertook was participating in the building of the Taconic Parkway in New York State. The company constructed its first hot mix asphalt plant at Tower Brick Co. in 1939. In 1940, they acquired a quarry site in Plainville and moved the business to this location where it remains today.

With his wife, and eventually his four sons, Tomasso continued to build the company into the early 1950s. In 1950 the sons had set a record by transporting 797 tons of blacktop 26 miles to Bradley Field and laying it all in a single day. The whole contract involved the manufacture and placement of 15,000 tons. Upon Angelo Sr.'s death in 1952, his oldest son, Angelo, Jr., worked to build on his father's success.

The next few decades saw major acquisitions and mergers, adding quarries and asphalt and concrete plants. From 1957 to 1970, the company growth timeline is summarized as follows:

  • 1957 - North Haven Asphalt Company, Tomasso of North Haven, Inc. founded
  • 1961 - Sherman Sand and Stone Co. (New Britain), Sherman-Tomasso Concrete Inc. founded
  • 1964 - Arborio & Sons (Farmington), Formation of new entity Arborio-Tomasso, Inc.
  • 1965 - Construction of new concrete plant in Middletown
  • 1969 - Helming Brothers (Bristol)
  • 1970 - Construction of Portland Asphalt Plant
In January, 1972, Angelo Tomasso, Inc. was sold to Ashland Resources Co., a division of Ashland Oil Inc., in Ashland, Kentucky. Ashland also owned New Haven Trap Rock Co., the state's largest supplier of crushed stone and other road building materials. Trap Rock's North Branford quarry was considered the world's largest single-face trap rock quarry with a frontage of 1-1/4 miles.

Thomas Tilling Ltd., a British company, purchased the northeast regional construction group of Ashland Oil in 1979. Tomasso became known as Tilcon Tomasso, a division of Tilcon Warren, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Tilling Ltd. In 1984, Tilcon Inc. was acquired by the British Tire and Rubber Company. The company's name was changed to Tilcon Connecticut in 1990.

In 1996, the business was sold to CRH of Dublin, Ireland which is publicly traded on the NASDAQ (ticker symbol CRHCY). The company continues to expand and is the leading supplier in the fast growing highways and construction materials trades in the Connecticut market.

Giant machines helped Angelo Tomasso achieve a state record in 1968. Tomasso laid a mile of concrete a day on a 3 1/2 mile stretch of interstate 84 in Connecticut.

In 1976 the Tilcon plant proudly recognized our nation's Bicentennial.

In 1991 Tilcon was featured on the cover of the Southern New England Construction Journal magazine.
