Tilcon is dedicated to the health and safety of our employees, our most valuable asset. Our goal is to provide a safe work environment for employees, business partners, subcontractors, and valued customers. Every day we strive to achieve this goal through planning, training and compliance with all State and Federal Regulations. Given the diverse nature of our operations, some of these regulatory bodies include Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Department of Transportation (Federal & State).

Tilcon has a longstanding commitment to its communities for over 80 years. We take great pride in supporting a broad range of civic groups and organizations and have a long history with many of them. As a leader in our industry, we feel it's of utmost importance to be a good neighbor.

Our employees are an integral part of our community relations success because they volunteer for events that Tilcon hosts such as Open Houses and quarry tours as well as participate in other community-related activities. These activities include Habitat for Humanity projects, fundraising walks, administering the holiday giving program as well as donating items, or participating in golf tournament fundraisers. Tilcon employees are proud to be part of the company's efforts to give back to the community, which is shown through their extraordinary generosity.

"Watch that Child" has been the company's creed for decades and communicates Tilcon's commitment to safety. This company creed is found on all of our trucks, which are seen by Connecticut citizens daily. We believe this strong message underscores our commitment to community involvement and our priority for safe operations.

At Tilcon we work hard to ensure the best environmental and conservation practices at each of our locations. Our industry is strictly regulated by federal, state, county and local laws on air, soil and water quality. We are committed to minimizing the impact of extraction during the working lives of our quarries in Connecticut.

Recent awards demonstrate Tilcon's achievements in environmental stewardship. In 2007, Tilcon received NAPA's Diamond Achievement Commendation for Excellence in Hot Mix Asphalt Plant/Site Operations for New Britain, North Branford, North Haven, Newington, and Manchester plants.

Tilcon also works in partnership with the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC). In 2005, WHC approached Tilcon about restoring and enhancing the wildlife around its Colchester site located on Rte. 149, along the Airline Trail and the Jeremy River, a feeder stream of the Salmon River. Tilcon accepted the invitation and encouraged its employees to participate in WHC's "Wildlife at Work" program. Tilcon employees, along with other community organizations, volunteered their time to remove invasive plants from the location. They also planted native plant species, built nest boxes for birds and monitored the nest boxes once they were established. Through this effort, Tilcon employees have helped restore and conserve the habitat of this area.

Tilcon has also sponsored the Connecticut Forest and Park Association's CT Trails Day for the past 12 years. Other organizations Tilcon actively supports are the National Resources Council of CT, Branford Land Trust, CT River Watershed Council, and the Nature Conservancy of CT.

At its Plainville Quarry, Tilcon has installed an energy efficient and environmentally-friendly hot mix asphalt (HMA) plant that includes a lower emission burner, enhanced noise controls, and a vapor recovery system. As an active participant in Connecticut Light and Power and the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund's (CEEF) energy-efficiency programs, Tilcon was presented, in 2007, with a monetary incentive from CL&P and the CEEF for installing a single hot-mix asphalt drum plant, as opposed to traditional equipment. This incentive will save almost 694,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

Central Connecticut State University Soil and Vegetation class students volunteer to identify and remove invasive plant species as part of Tilcon's Wildlife Habitat Council program.

Tilcon's concrete reclaimer is used to reclaim the concrete that has not been used at the jobsite. The reclaiming process offers substantial environmental benefits including the ability to recycle and reuse stone and sand, along with fresh water savings and processed wash water management control.
